Eric David Woloshyn, owner of EDW Builders Inc., has been in construction since he was old enough to swing a hammer. That’s no surprise, considering his family history; his grandfather, father and brother all preceded him into the business.
Woloshyn studied business at Delaware Valley College and attended Council Rock High School, but no amount of institutional education could stack up to the hands-on experience he acquired while growing up. These skills he’s learned over the years—from framing to excavation, from concrete work to the finest finish details, and from office work to operating heavy machinery—are all now vital to his own business operation as the third generation of his family to earn a living in construction.
Based out of Newtown, EDW Builders specializes in new construction as well as restoration and remodeling of whole homes, bathrooms and kitchens, as well as outdoor spaces such as sunrooms, patios, enclosed porches, decks and garages. EDW has also completed a number of renovations to make homes easier to maneuver for people with disabilities.
EDW’s service area includes parts of Pennsylvania (Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties) and New Jersey (Burlington, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset and Union counties)—or, as Woloshyn says, “from the Poconos to the Jersey Shore.” Even so, Woloshyn says the company usually takes on only one new client at a time in order to provide the utmost service and attention. And, thanks to EDW’s work history, it is usually very easy for the company to obtain the permits and approval of local authorities and inspections needed to complete projects.
“What sets us apart from a lot of builders locally is that I’ve been in the business, in the trade, and I’ve done every aspect of building,” he says, noting altogether he possesses all the skills necessary to build a home from the ground up. Also, as a “green builder,” Woloshyn takes care in selecting eco-friendly and energy-efficient products and practices. He is also well versed in accommodating clients’ wishes to utilize alternative energy systems such as solar- and wind-power generators.
EDW has won numerous national awards for its commercial and residential work. The rebuilding and refitting of Frozen Cow Yogurt in Chalfont, for example, earned the company local, regional (eastern United States) and national honors at the Contractor of the Year Awards in April. These honors are impressive considering the fact that the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), which presented the awards, represents roughly 800,000 companies and individual remodelers in the United States.
Although humble when speaking about these accolades, Woloshyn admits, “It was very impressive.”
This wasn’t EDW Builders’ only honor: NARI also awarded EDW with the 2013 “Contractor of the Year Award for Entire House Residential” in the $250,000 to $500,000 category, as well as honors from the NARI of Bucks-Mont Chapter and the Central Jersey NARI Chapter for the company’s work on a severely fire-damaged home in Ivyland. EDW transformed that house, which suffered extensive smoke, fire and water damage, into what is now a 100,000-square-foot dream home.
“For anyone who has ever had to deal with a disaster in [their] home, you know that it is one of the hardest things that you will ever have to go through,” Diane Meyers, owner of this home, writes on Houzz.com. “For days following the fire that occurred at my home, I had to deal with restoration companies, contractors, lawyers and very aggressive public adjusters who were like sharks swarming the property. Being a single mom, I really didn’t know who I needed or what to do, but I knew that I was the one who had to deal with it. ... Then I met Eric from EDW Builders and I instantly knew he was the one for the job. From that point on he took care of everything.”
She continues, “The best thing I can say about EDW Builders is that the price that they quoted was the price that I paid for a completed ready-to-move-in house. There were no hidden costs, extras or surprises. The house came out amazing and over one year later I have not had to call him back for any problems. Eric Woloshyn is an honest man and an excellent builder. He gave me a house I never dreamed I would have, and the entire experience was pleasant, exciting and fun.”
As for the future of the company, Woloshyn’s plans seem clear: “We want to keep it small so the quality stays good.” He also says he wants his six children—three girls, three boys—to follow in his footsteps, continuing the family tradition as a fourth generation of interior designers, engineers and architects to earn a living by making homes beautiful.
