Local author’s “Food Triggers” offers insight into America’s struggles with weight loss
When someone speaks of their demons almost ruining their life, they most likely aren’t referring to problems with overeating. Yet food addiction does exist, and Rhona Epstein, Psy.D., knows of its insidious effects all too well. In her newly published book, “Food Triggers,” Epstein details how her childhood preoccupation with food—sweets, in particular—led to a full-blown compulsion and eating disorder that nearly derailed her adult life before it even started.
“People don’t realize how damaging [food addiction] can be,” says Epstein, a psychologist with Life Counseling Services in Paoli, where she provides individual, couples and group psychotherapy. “Someone who might be a normal-looking person may be trying to do the right thing but can’t and they lose control. It’s like being a drug addict. … The amount of hours and time and energy that goes into trying to overcome the problem is robbing people of much of their life. It’s a 24-hour problem.”
It’s also an increasingly prevalent dilemma. Data from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that nearly 70 percent of adults age 20 years and older are overweight or obese. In other words, most Americans struggle with weight issues, some of which are being influenced by food addiction. The price is a hefty one, as excess weight can lead to not only a raft of health problems, ranging from diabetes to heart disease to certain kinds of cancer, but also poor self-esteem.
Her book explains how certain foods can trigger overeating in a countless number of people. Whereas sweets such as ice cream and doughnuts triggered her impulse, others are drawn to salty, crunchy, fatty or starchy foods. She says that understanding the body—and how certain foods can affect the brain’s chemistry—can help people overcome problems with impulse eating, which is not only a physical problem but also an emotional and spiritual one.
Weight-loss programs from local specialists such as Philadelphia-based Robert Fortino, M.D. (drfortino.net), Downingtown-based Vince Fraumeni, D.C. (docvince.com), and Exton-based Marcus R. Williams, M.D. (extonmd.com), can help people lose the weight that has been dragging them down. Epstein suggests any program to help someone who struggles with obesity and food addiction should enlist the aid of a 12-step program designed to reinforce behaviors that can lead them toward a healthier lifestyle.
“There is hope if you are struggling, and hope is the most important thing,” she says. “People use food to calm their nerves, to deal with boredom and to feel better about being sad or heartbroken. And it works; it does change your brain and make you feel better. It’s a hard thing to turn around, and that’s where therapy comes in. … It’s about learning to cope without the coping mechanism.”
Epstein describes the old her as “completely out of control”—a bulimic who would have been severely obese if not for the cycle of binge eating and starvation. Her turnaround came 30 years ago, when she discovered a recovery group, and she’s happy to report that she hasn’t had a binge or an obsession with food since. —Bill Donahue
