The Perfect Combination
Drs. R. Barrett Noone and R. Brannon Claytor combine to “make patients’ lives better” at the Noone Plastic Surgery Institute
Plastic surgeon R. Barrett Noone, M.D., FACS, is something of a living legend, a man who has been a highly credentialed surgeon and medical professional for more than four decades. So when he set out to find a new doctor to join his practice—formerly called Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Associates, now known as the Noone Plastic Surgery Institute—he knew he needed to find someone with an equally impressive CV and a commitment to the craft.
To this day, Dr. Noone performs a host of surgical procedures, including facelifts, tummy tucks, rhinoplasties and blepharoplasties, in addition to in-office procedures such as cosmetic fillers and neuromodulator injections. He also utilizes his considerable skills for reconstructive purposes. It was his expertise in reconstructive surgery that brought him into contact with R. Brannon Claytor, M.D., FACS.
Dr. Claytor had been familiar with Dr. Noone’s work for years, recognizing Dr. Noone as a leader in plastic and reconstructive surgery. It was for this very reason that five years ago, when a friend needed an expert to perform a breast reconstruction surgery, Dr. Claytor advised her to enlist the expertise of Dr. Noone. “I recommended to her that she seek out Dr. Noone because he’s clearly the best,” Dr. Claytor says of his colleague. “That’s how we got to know each other.”
The two doctors went on to see one another at the occasional conference or national meeting, but it wasn’t until about a year ago that Dr. Noone mentioned a life-changing opportunity.
“Dr. Noone announced he was undertaking a nationwide search to find somebody to take over his practice, and he asked if I’d be interested,” Dr. Claytor shares. “It was my hope to be able to join with Dr. Noone and, through a transition of his practice, help carry on the legacy of the great care that he has offered.”
Although Dr. Claytor had been in private practice in New England., for 10 years, he decided he could not pass up the opportunity to work alongside a man who most consider a modern-day pioneer in reconstructive and plastic surgery.
Dr. Claytor already had strong ties to southeastern Pennsylvania. “I grew up here,” says Dr. Claytor, a graduate of Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. “I went to The Haverford School. I was a red-jacket volunteer at Bryn Mawr Hospital about 35 years ago, and I had my appendix out there about 40 years ago, so Bryn Mawr Hospital is very dear to me. I have a great respect for the hospital and its physicians.”
Of course, hometown ties weren’t all that sold Dr. Noone on Dr. Claytor. Dr. Noone also appreciated the commitment embodied by Dr. Claytor’s education and training. Dr. Claytor performed research at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania while in medical school and completed Fellowship training at renowned institutions such as Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis, and his residency in plastic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. During his time in New England, Dr. Claytor also served as a clinical instructor at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Drs. Noone and Claytor both remain active in terms of continuing education. Dr. Noone, who served as a director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery from 1988 to 1994, has been the first executive director of the board since 1997. In this capacity, Dr. Noone serves as a member of a select group that oversees all of the plastic surgeons in the United States. The American Board of Plastic Surgery organization is one of only 24 medical specialty boards listed in the American Board of Medical Specialties, on which Dr. Noone also sits. In this position Dr. Noone works with a prestigious team of doctors from various specialties to improve the quality of medical care nationwide, largely by ensuring the efficacy of exams a medical professional must pass in order to become board certified.
Dr. Claytor, for his part, for the past three years has been teaching Maintenance of Certification courses on abdominoplasty and liposuction for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Claytor explains. “All plastic surgeons benefit from ongoing education, and I enjoy being part of the faculty.”
The practice’s patients, of course, reap the benefits of this commitment to professional advancement. Dr. Noone developed a ground-breaking suture suspension technique that emphasizes tightening tissue under the skin during a facelift to make the lift last longer, with superior aesthetic results. Dr. Claytor offers patients an advanced abdominoplasty technique that originated with surgeons in Brazil where liposuction can be combined with the tummy tuck procedure and, in selected patients, no drains are needed.
In addition, Drs. Noone and Claytor are collaborating to popularize a nonsurgical set of procedures they refer to as the “Main Line Lift.” When combined, these procedures help patients achieve a rejuvenated appearance similar to that of a facelift but without the surgery. Rather, a blend of the fillers Restylane®, Perlane?® and Sculptra® is employed. This is ideal for patients whose faces have lost their youthful volume but are not candidates for surgery.
“We keep innovation going because we want to improve on what we’re doing,” says Dr. Noone. “We’re always looking to improve on our techniques.”
It is interesting to note that it was Dr. Claytor who, once fully initiated as Dr. Noone’s new partner in practice, pushed to rename the practice as the Noone Plastic Surgery Institute.
“I am very honored and feel privileged that Dr. Noone has selected me to carry on his legacy,” Dr. Claytor says. “My vision is that Noone Plastic Surgery Institute will contribute in the collection of research data and help optimize patient outcomes.”
It will also be a place where the staff can continue working toward Dr. Noone’s longstanding mission: “to make patients’ lives better.”
