The practice, which is associated with Doylestown Hospital, has two convenient locations: its main office in Doylestown; and its Health and Wellness Center in Warrington. Its highly trained staff of experienced physicians are fellowship trained in subspecialty areas that allow them to offer a broad range of treatment options. The practice offers specialty services dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system—bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Its physicians believe in the local connection Doylestown Hospital offers. Among them is Dr. Thomas Mackell who earned his medical degree from the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine, although he has been interviewing student applicants for his undergraduate alma mater, Georgetown University, for nearly 20 years. He has also been a member of Doylestown Hospital staff for more than three decades. He specializes in joint replacement and fracture care. Dr. Mackell was attracted to orthopedics because of an interest in technology and the opportunity to correct the functional problems of his patients. While he welcomes change, he does not jump on any technological bandwagon. “As technology advances and is proven,” says Dr. Mackell, “then we will provide it and use it correctly.” His longstanding relationship with Doylestown Hospital has led Dr. Mackell to appreciate its dedicated and competent staff of nurses, physicians and other clinical personnel. He is an active participant in the community, having served on several of the hospital’s staff committees, been active with the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce and been founding director of two community banks. He was also a captain, medical advisor and senior pilot with the 907th Flight Squadron Doylestown Civil Air Patrol.
Dr. Kieran Cody also attended Temple University School of Medicine. He is an orthopedic sports medicine specialist with particular expertise in correcting a broad range of shoulder and knee problems. His qualifications include a sports medicine fellowship at Stanford University that involved working with the San Francisco 49ers football team as well as a number of Olympic athletes. For more than a decade now, Dr. Cody has been the team orthopedic surgeon for Central Bucks East High School and the team physician for New Hope-Solebury High School. For Dr. Cody, returning people to motion is what orthopedics is all about. “Whether my patient wants to run a marathon or run after grandchildren,” he says, “my approach is to customize treatment to individual needs, using the latest treatments and techniques available to speed patients back to full activity.” An avid biker, skier and runner with four young boys, Dr. Cody understands that his patients need to recover quickly and thoroughly.
Dr. Charles Burrows, a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine, who came to Doylestown Hospital more than a decade ago after completing fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania/Pennsylvania Hospital. To him, Doylestown Hospital offers outstanding care with a personal touch. “While many large ‘big city’ hospitals are practicing the ‘business of medicine,’ Doylestown Hospital has continued to pursue excellence in patient care,” says Dr. Burrows. A sports injury in high school led Dr. Burrows to develop his interest in orthopedics, and his concentration eventually gravitated toward hip-and-knee replacement. He now enjoys an active life with his family participating in sports as well as rooting for Philadelphia sports teams.
After graduating from Temple University School of Medicine, Robert W. Handy, M.D., launched a 14-year career with the U.S. Army. He served two years as a flight surgeon in the Republic of Korea and four years as a general orthopedic surgeon in Heidelberg, Germany, before serving in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. During his time in Europe, Dr. Handy completed an AO International Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at St. George’s Hospital in London. Following his yearlong fellowship in hip-and-knee-replacement surgery at the Pennsylvania Hospital, he instructed orthopedic residents for two years at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., where he also commanded the 102nd Forward Surgical Team. He later deployed with his unit to Kandahar, Afghanistan. Dr. Handy separated from the Army in 2003 but has since rejoined in 2012 and is now a colonel in the Pennsylvania National Guard. A native of Doylestown, Dr. Handy has returned to work with the very hospital where he was born—a homecoming of sorts. “Doylestown Hospital excels in patient care,” he says. “Physicians work well as a team to address all the needs of their patients. The nurses are caring, devoted and motivated.” Here, we now specialize in state-of-the-art arthroscopic surgery on shoulders and knees.
Dr. Ninad Sthalekar specializes in interventional spine procedures and pain management. He credits a number of inspiring mentors at his medical school, St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, for his interest in treating spine disorders. Dr. Sthalekar embraces the latest advances in technology to increase safety, efficiency and accuracy of the interventional procedures he performs. He is board certified in pain medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation and routinely performs epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, peripheral nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulator trials and all peripheral joint injections. Dr. Sthalekar’s philosophy of care is to treat every patient with respect and compassion. “Many of our physicians are locals,” says Dr. Sthalekar. “Therefore, patients and staff have the sense of personal attention without sacrificing the quality of care.”
Dr. Thomas Vikoren specializes in hip and knee replacements as well as the repair of complex fractures, particularly around joint replacements. Dr. Vikoren became interested in orthopedics while studying physics at Dartmouth College. Orthopedics allows him to combine his mechanical interests with his desire to positively impact people’s lives. While at medical school, Dr. Vikoren was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and received the University of Pittsburgh Medical School Alumni Association Research Scholarship. He is particularly interested in the science behind joint replacements and the improvements in both implant technology and surgical techniques. At the same time, he is cautious not to embrace new technologies without having seen proven results. Dr. Vikoren has a strong “hometown connection.” He was born in Doylestown Hospital and raised in the area. Many local residents will also recognize the family name, as his mother practiced OB/GYN at the hospital for 30 years.
Sean Butler, D.O., is a graduate of New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology and completed his residency training at JFK medical center and Robert Wood Johnson hospital in New Jersey. He also completed a fellowship in York in interventional spine techniques. He specializes in interventional spine care and non-operative sports medicine. Dr. Butler is passionate about treating painful conditions and restoring function after injury. Dr. Butler resides in Doylestown with his wife and newborn daughter. Aside from medicine, he enjoys writing and playing music, as well as jogging.
The physician assistants at Bucks County Orthopedic Specialists work closely with the physicians and are proficient in diagnosing and treating a broad range of orthopedic problems.
