With winter winding down, the Philadelphia area is coming alive with the promise of nicer weather. In preparation for spring and summer, having one’s eyes in top shape is essential. Just ask Sanjay Kamat, D.O., who excels at keeping patients’ eyes healthy, strong and even stylish.
Dr. Kamat’s Yardley-based ophthalmology practice, Bucks Eye Specialists, has blossomed since March 2009, when he took the reins to the practice from his childhood ophthalmologist, Barry Kutner, M.D. Here, Dr. Kamat and his experienced team help patients see the world clearly and address quality-of-life conditions such as dry eye, as well as avert serious conditions, such as macular degeneration and eyelid cancers. “Service is where we stand out, and that’s not going to change,” says Dr. Kamat, who devotes nearly 90 percent of his time to patient care. “We’re providing full, comprehensive eye care. Yes, we can certainly take care of prescriptions for glasses or contacts, but what we really do is provide a level of service people and expertise people aren’t going to find somewhere else. When you come here, you’re going to spend a lot of personal time with me or another member of my team.”

These photochromatic glasses, whose lenses darken with direct contact with ultraviolent light, are now polarized to provide for exceptional vision.
In addition to being destination for perfect-fitting, perfectly prescribed eyeglasses and contact lenses, Dr. Kamat’s practice also provides vision-improving procedures such as all-laser LASIK services and the removal of vision-impairing cataracts while simultaneously implanting intraocular lenses. Cataracts, which typically start appearing in a person’s 40s, prohibit light from passing easily through the lens of the eye, making the vision appear blurred. A skilled ophthalmologist such as Dr. Kamat can now not only remove the cloudy, natural lens but also replace it with an artificial replacement. This replacement—an intraocular lens—helps the patient see clearly once again.
“It used to be the average age for doing cataract surgery was 80,” he says. “Then it was 65 to 70, and now we’re beginning to offer it at an even younger age. People are leading more active lifestyles later in life, so having the surgery done younger makes a lot of sense.”
Dr. Kamat is uniquely qualified in numerous therapies and procedures to improve the health of the eye. After graduating at the top of his class from Pennsbury High School, Dr. Kamat earned a bachelor’s in premedicine and a master’s in physiology from Pennsylvania State University. He attended medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience, and then returned to Philadelphia for his ophthalmology residency at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he served as chief resident. He also worked at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he gained invaluable experience in cataract surgery and oculoplastic trauma.
Board certified by the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology, Dr. Kamat is a clinical instructor at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia and is also the ophthalmologist for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s Northeast Regional Center in Philadelphia. Furthermore, he is on staff at numerous facilities in the tri-state area: Campus Eye Group in Hamilton, N.J.; St. Mary’s Medical Center, Aria Health’s Bucks County Campus and Forest Health Medical Center, all based in Langhorne; the Wills Eye Surgical Network, with locations in Warminster and Cherry Hill; Phoenixville Hospital in Phoenixville; Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia; Delaware Surgery Center in Dover, Del.; and Glasgow Surgery Center in Glasgow, Del.
Dr. Kamat’s team includes Dana Cianni, O.D., who was an optometrist with Temple Health System Philadelphia before joining Bucks Eye Specialists since July 2011. Dr. Cianni is licensed to treat ocular diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. She also has extensive training and experience fitting a variety of contacts, including specialty and cosmetic lenses.
“I guess what I’m saying is that people are in good hands when they come here,” Dr. Kamat says. “If something has happened to an eye, we have likely seen it before.”
