The images are unforgettable : doctors and nurses comforting those suffering patients and communities amid a deadly pandemic ; exhausted faces showing “ mask marks ” from so many hours healthy . of wearing tight - fitting PPE ; citywide salutes to the men and women who have placed others ’ health before their own . Philadelphia and its suburbs have an abundance of compassionate , exceptionally well trained , and highly educated physicians capable of mending broken bones , curing diseases , and soothing the soul . We honor them here , with the results of a months - long poll in which readers shared their votes for the area’s top physicians . We added some selections of our own , based on recent stories about doctors who have devoted their careers to keeping patients — and entire community — healthy . We vetted individuals based on five criteria : n Are they licensed and insured in their field ? n Do they have advanced training in a specific area of specialty and / or board certi - fication ? n Are they affiliated with notable profes - sional organizations to help them stay abreast of changes in technology and techniques that may improve patient outcomes ? n Do they commit to continuing educa - tion ? n Are they strengthening their communities through philanthropic commitments or oth - erwise helping those most in need ? One point of clarification : A number of the professionals and organizations featured in this article do advertise in Suburban Life , but inclusion on this list was not based on their advertising decisions .
