Best of Chester County
We honor the many treasures of Chesco.
Given its deep agricultural roots, Chester County is known for its vast open spaces, rolling hills, and equestrian culture. But its idyllic charms tell only part of the story; towns like Malvern, Phoenixville, and West Chester have become magnets for young families, drawn to their lively culinary and cultural scenes. “Chesco” also boasts bastions of top-tier education and health care, not to mention some of the most consequential historical sites from the days of the Revolutionary War.
Put another way, Chester County has it all—as evidenced by the embarrassment of riches highlighted in these pages. We present our 2026 “Best of Chester County.”
The Brandywine Museum of Art has an extensive collection well worth viewing, including works of Americana created by the Wyeth family of artists. That said, the experience extends far beyond the walls of the museum. Walk the trails of the museum’s 15-acre Chadds Ford campus, especially this time of year, and you’ll see sculptures and immense natural beauty, accompanied by the music of birdsong and the burbling of the Brandywine Creek. brandywine.org/museum
One word: Blobfest. The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville hosts the annual horror and camp festival every summer, in honor of the 1958 horror/sci-fi classic starring Steve McQueen, part of which was filmed at the theater. Besides Blobfest, the Colonial shows new film releases, arthouse flicks, and cult classics, and also hosts live performances (music, poetry, comedy, etc.). The historic theater, whose roots stretch back to the early 1900s, continues to delight and surprise the community. thecolonialtheatre.com
Plant-based cuisine has come a long way in a relatively short time, and the creative team behind Ground Provisions in West Chester—the same folks behind Vedge, one of Philly’s best restaurants—have led the charge. Everything about Ground Provisions is a surprise: the tucked-away location, the intimacy of the dining room, and, more than anything else, the food, even though you go into the experience knowing the food will be wonderful. It’s one of Chester County’s greatest treasures. groundprovisionspa.com
Indian restaurants cater to vegetarians and omnivores alike, and they make it easy to make relatively healthy decisions. We’re suckers for mutter paneer, chana masala, and other culinary delights from South Asia. Kaanchi Indian Cuisine in Thorndale serves up some of the best in the area, including some dishes you’re not likely to find elsewhere; Kaanchi’s recipes include those inspired by the cuisine of India’s northern and southern regions. kaanchipa.com
Longwood Gardens is lovely year-round, even in the coldest and grayest day of winter, but we have officially entered the season where practically every inch of the grounds pops with color and life. There’s something to be seen and experienced around every corner, both indoors and out. At a time when so much of the world seems in conflict, Longwood seems to represent a near-perfect balance between wildness and curation, an example of humanity and nature working hand in hand. longwoodgardens.org
Community theaters have a vital role to play, now more than ever: inspire dialogue, invite civic debate, and challenge people’s perceptions of the world and humanity’s place in it. Consider The Woman Question, which in May will have its world premiere at People’s Light in Malvern. Billed as a docu-fantasy, The Woman Question explores the stories of medical pioneers from a century and a half ago who forever transformed women’s health and reproductive freedom. The production is just one example of the groundbreaking theater patrons have come to expect from People’s Light. peopleslight.org
For more than 30 years, Ron’s Original Bar & Grille in Exton has been offering “real food for the health of it”: scratch-made fare with a pronounced Italian influence that is as nutritious as it is delicious. Think antibiotic- and hormone-free proteins, organic eggs, and imported Italian flour made from ancient grains. Ron’s even makes its own salad dressings as a way to eliminate unnecessary preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial ingredients. Ron’s also has festive bar area with a vast menu of cocktails and other libations, as well as live music on weekends. ronsoriginal.com
Spice up your life at Tai Me Up in Phoenixville, which has mastered the art of Thai cuisine. Tai Me Up can certainly deliver on Thai food’s fiery reputation, though the culinary staff can adjust a dish’s heat level without sacrificing the flavor. Besides pad Thai, various curries, and other house specialties, Tai Me Up is known for its lineup of artisanal cocktails. taimeup.com
Last year, when a fire at Exton’s Eagleview Town Center affected Wellington Square Bookshop, local readers held their breath. The bookshop reopened after a brief closure—whew—so bibliophiles have returned to add more novels, memoirs, and other books to their precious TBR piles. They’re also back to socializing and expanding their minds through book clubs and in-person events. Many, of course, are doing all of the above. wellingtonsquarebooks.com
There are few problems that cannot be fixed by a Scotch egg and a pint of Guinness. You’ll find both at The Whip Tavern in Coatesville, an English pub that’s authentic in both style and substance. In addition to Scotch eggs, you’ll find U.K. culinary standbys such as Welsh rarebit, bangers and mash, and fish and chips. Exotic yet profoundly comfortable, The Whip seems as if it were born far afield and transplanted to the middle of Chester County horse country—and we couldn’t be happier. thewhiptavern.com
