Jose Garces’s Amada has been a longtime gem of Philly’s Old City neighborhood, though it has made an equally impressive home on the Main Line. Amada Radnor serves up the same signature Spanish tapas found at the original location—croquetas de jamón, patatas bravas, albóndigas—but without the effort of having to venture into the city. Autograph Brasserie, which is part of the Fearless Restaurants family, has created something special in Wayne. The inspired cuisine could be described as modern American with a slight French accent. The memorable décor is worth a mention, too; the walls bear hundreds of photos, album covers, and celebrity autographs in celebration of the people, places, and things that have helped frame pop culture over the years. autographbrasserie.com
The Berwyn Farmers Market at Bronze Plaza in Berwyn cultivates a mix of as many as 30 local farmers, food artisans, artists, and makers; expect farm-fresh produce, pasture-raised meats, baked goods, small-batch coffee, and much more. You’ll find something different every time, from theme weekends and food trucks to special events such as the Tomatopalooza festival (early August). The Black Powder Tavern’s name has a distinctively Revolutionary War feel to it, which makes perfect sense considering its ties to Washington’s Continental Army. That said, there’s so much more than rich history here. The BPT’s menu features many American classics, offering all the comforts of sitting fireside on a cold winter’s day. For handcrafted cocktails and inventive tavern classics, head to one of Brick & Brew Gastropub’s three locations—Havertown, Malvern, and Media. Choose from an extensive lineup of spirits to accompany menu highlights such as pancetta fries, chicken tinga tacos, and some fantastic pizzas; the fig and walnut variety is a memorable alternative to an everyday sauce-and-cheese pie. An independent theater is a good barometer of a community’s overall well-being. Bryn Mawr has one of the best in Bryn Mawr Film Institute, which screens current arthouse films as well as classics such as The Princess Bride, Ben-Hur, and Young Frankenstein. It’s also a classroom of sorts, offering workshops and other educational offerings that delve into the art of filmmaking and the power of visual storytelling. brynmawrfilm.org
There’s no place quite like Char & Stave Coffee Roasters in Ardmore—unless, of course, you count its sister location in Chestnut Hill. When it comes to in-store book signings and events featuring top-tier author talent, few local bookstores can compete with Bucks County’s Doylestown Bookshop. Wayne’s Main Point Books is one of the few. Recent and upcoming in-store events include appearances from the likes of Jake Tapper and Jodi Picoult. The store also hosts several book groups, among other events for readers of all ages. Make a beeline for The Goat’s Beard in Wayne—or its other location in Manayunk—for, among other things, some seriously good Detroit-style pizza. Our favorite is the Bianco, featuring mozzarella and ricotta, broccoli, tomatoes, and roasted garlic, though it also has at least one option some might consider bold, if not divisive: the Pickle Pizza, with roasted garlic and dill crema, bacon, mozzarella, and, of course, a generous layer of pickle chips. thegoatsbeardphilly.com
The Pullman in Bryn Mawr has one of the area’s most distinctive atmospheres for dining and having drinks: unique location, posh interior, a menu full of well-crafted starters and entrées, as well as handcrafted cocktails. Despite its elegant appearance, The Pullman is decidedly down to earth.
