Attorney H. Jeffrey Brahin is known throughout the region for providing legal solutions to clients in matters as diverse as real estate and commercial litigation, transactional real estate as well as corporate matters and general civil litigation.
Brahin’s is a regional practice with offices in Doylestown, as well as Lower Bucks County, Center City Philadelphia and Jenkintown. “Our clients are based essentially all over the Delaware Valley,” he explains. “We work in all the different courts of the Delaware Valley, including common pleas and the federal district court,” as well as courts in the Lehigh Valley.
Brahin’s firm covers a host of legal areas including business and partnership formation, contract drafting, and business and real estate acquisition and sales. “We help small to medium-sized businesses and real estate entities with most of their needs,” he explains.
The firm also handles most types of litigation, whether it be a covenant not to compete, construction, option agreement, business dissolution (also known as “business divorce”), commercial landlord/tenant—“pretty much any type of civil litigation that has to do with a client’s business or real estate,” he says.
Transactional work entails a great deal of documentation, the importance of which cannot be understated, according to Brahin. Whether it is in relation to an asset or purchase or a contract or joint-venture agreement, “The stronger the documents you have, the less likely you’ll have to litigate,” Brahin says. “If [the matter] evolves into litigation, there is a significant increase in the likelihood of a favorable outcome for you in court.”
Brahin is supported in practice by two highly experienced “of counsel” attorneys, Alan L. Frank and Martin N. Ghen. Frank leads the Brahin Law team in Jenkintown in what Brahin describes as one of “the premier commercial litigation firms in the Delaware Valley.” With Frank’s capability and experience, Brahin says he can always expect a superlative effort from him. Ghen, who Brahin describes as “an extremely bright, capable attorney,” is a seasoned civil litigator with more than 40 years of experience in his field which, Brahin notes, “has been invaluable” to the firm and its clients.
Along with these attorneys, Brahin’s team includes a paralegal who has been with Brahin for nearly the entire time he has been practicing law. Brahin explains that because of the paralegal’s demeanor and knowledge, clients love her. He jokes, “I’ve had the benefit of training her for a long period of time, but she certainly teaches me a thing or two as well.”
A graduate of Tufts University (cum laude) and the Dickinson School of Law, Brahin has been in his field for more than 30 years. Formerly a member of a midsized Bucks County firm, he decided approximately 10 years ago to found his own practice to better serve his clients.
“One of the reasons I decided to go out on my own was that I think I can deliver the high-quality legal services traditionally offered by larger firms, but I can do so in a more cost-effective way and with greater attention to my clients’ goals,” Brahin says. “I’ve had over 30 years of experience. I’ve worked with larger firms, I’ve been in midsized firms, but I think that the smaller-firm setting can often be very beneficial to my clients.
“I really try to look for practical solutions to my clients’ problems,” he continues. “Sometimes the practical solution is looking for a reasonable settlement. … Sometimes it’s taking the matter to trial. Either way, as I’m litigating, I really try to be respectful of what my clients’ needs are.”
Brahin’s commitment to the community is as strong as his commitment to clients. A former Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, Brahin has also served as past president, secretary and board member for his local Kiwanis club. At present, he is a board member and volunteer delivering meals for Meals on Wheels of Central Bucks County. “It’s a great organization,” Brahin says. “It essentially provides home-cooked meals to the elderly and those folks who just can’t get out to buy their own meals.”
He also serves on the editorial board of The Chronicle, a scholarly journal of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society covering topics related to stamp and cover collecting. Brahin is also a family man and enjoys spending time with his wife and 14-year-old son.
As a sign of his skill and commitment to his craft, Brahin also teaches continuing legal education seminars on commercial and real estate litigation for organizations including the Bucks County Bar Association and Pennsylvania Bar Institute. Yet, even with all of his organizational involvement, Brahin’s commitment to his clients remains resolute.
“I really strive to provide real value to my clients as opposed to just having them go to a larger firm, spending maybe a lot of money they don’t need to spend and getting a solution that in the end they’re not necessarily happy with because of all the time and money they’ve spent,” Brahin says. “My clients’ investment in a quality legal solution is similar to their investment in any other type of business or real estate venture. I want to make sure I provide superlative value in relation to the investment my clients put in or in relation to the size or importance of the matter.”
In the end, Brahin says that no matter how different the cases may be, he approaches each case similarly.
“Ultimately I try to provide clients with all of the facts and the law so both of us can come up with best solution to my clients’ issues,” he says. “I look at a legal solution to an issue from my clients’ point of view. I try to achieve resolution with experience, creativity, practicality and boldness.”
