Never Too Busy for Beauty
Zyn Beauty, created by two former Philadelphia attorneys, brings salon-worthy hair and makeup services directly to clients
Zakiya Black and Nirvana Dove were working late nights at a Philadelphia law firm, trading ideas over Chinese food, when the bolt of lightning came.
“We were talking about how difficult it was to have our beauty needs met,” Black recalls. “I was getting my hair done in Wilmington, Del., at 10 or 11 at night, and by the time [the stylist] was finished it was 1 a.m. So we started thinking: Why don’t we do that? Over our late-night Chinese food sessions, we started working on a business plan.”
That business plan ultimately evolved into Zyn Beauty (zynbeauty.com), a company built to minimize the obstacles that often prevent busy women from having the fresh hairstyle or perfect makeup that can help her look and feel her best. The idea underpinning Zyn Beauty has struck a chord with women throughout the Philadelphia area: essential beauty services at affordable prices, delivered to busy women at their homes, offices or other accessible locations.
Black and Dove had enough confidence in their fledgling concept to leave their jobs and devote 100 percent of their time to Zyn Beauty, which had its “soft launch” in January 2014. The company has since grown to a team of approximately 10 professionals who specialize in hair, nails and makeup. Clients can spend anywhere from $65 for a blowout to $80 for a trim and deep conditioner to $190 for full hair and makeup, according to Black, and the average ticket is $90. For hair treatments, the only necessity is a workable water source.
“We also do special events like Girlfriend Pamper Parties,” she adds. “Sometimes women just want to get together and do something fun and girly. … We had one person, for their baby shower, instead of playing baby-themed games, they brought us in and it was all about pampering themselves. We also do weddings.”
In the long term, Black and Dove hope to export their mobile beauty services to other nearby cities, such as New York and Washington, D.C. In the short term, the principals intend to stay true to their mission: helping women in the Greater Philadelphia Area find “the balance between busy and beautiful.”
“When we were attorneys working long hours, we found there was not a lot of time to make appointments for the woman who has a busy schedule but still wants to look fabulous every day,” Black says. “That’s our goal, our mission, our vision: to help you look and feel your best, at your convenience.” —Bill Donahue
