High Standards
Penn Medicine Princeton Health earns multiple awards and accreditations rooted in safety, quality, and a high standard of care.
by Staff

Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center (PMC) enjoyed a banner year in 2021, earning recognition as a high-performing hospital, spine surgery certification, primary stroke center designation, and various other awards and accreditations that signify quality care.

The quality recognitions demonstrate that staff members and physicians are committed to pursuing excellence, according to James Demetriades, CEO of Penn Medicine Princeton Health.
“Promoting safety, quality, and higher standards of care are all ingrained in the culture at PMC and across the Princeton Health system,” Demetriades said. “Our goal is to be the undisputed leader in quality and patient experience for this region.”

High Performing
PMC was rated high performing in five types of care in the 2021–2022 Best Hospitals rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

PMC was rated high performing in one adult specialty—orthopedics—and four additional areas: treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, and kidney failure, and performing knee-replacement procedures.

The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval®
* Perinatal Care. PMC once again received perinatal care certification, an advanced designation recognizing high-quality maternity care and facilities as well as the comprehensive prenatal care, educational programs, and support services that are available to new or growing families.

Princeton Health is one of seven healthcare organizations in New Jersey and 59 nationwide to earn perinatal care certification.

* Spine Surgery. PMC earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for spine surgery following an on-site survey and a thorough review of the hospital’s use of evidence-based practice guidelines, collection of data, and performance in key quality measures.

Working toward certification helps organizations to develop consistent communication among all providers involved in a patient’s care—from preoperative consultation through the procedure, rehabilitation, and follow-up care.

* Stroke Care. PMC is designated as a Primary Stroke Center, an advanced certification granted by the AHA/ASA and The Joint Commission.

The recognition, valid for two years, is based on an expert evaluation of the hospital’s compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements.

Achievements in Stroke Care
For the third year in a row, PMC earned the Get With The Guidelines®—Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, granted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) to hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to high quality stroke care.

The program is intended to optimize stroke management, speed recovery, reduce hospital readmissions, and improve quality of life for people who experience strokes.

Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure
PMC earned the 2021 Get With The Guidelines®—Heart Failure Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.

The Get With The Guidelines program is intended to speed recovery, reduce hospital readmissions, and improve the quality of life for people living with heart failure.

Exemplary, Patient-Centered Care for Older Adults
PMC was again recognized as an Exemplar Hospital by Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE), an international program promoting patient-centered nursing care for older adults.

The recognition was based on principles of evidence-based geriatric care at the bedside, patient- and family-centered environments, healthy and productive practice environment, and multidimensional metrics of quality.

Top Performer for Quality
PMC was recognized as a 2021 Top Performer in this year’s Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Rankings by Vizient, Inc., the nation’s largest healthcare improvement company. The hospital was rated on outcome measures in mortality, safety, effectiveness, efficiency, and patient-centeredness.
