Comeback Story
Physicians who specialize in orthopedic medicine embrace new techniques, technology, and other steps forward to help patients overcome infirmities associated with injury and age.
by Jill Lupine

“Man plans and God laughs.” The old saying suggests that even as humans think about the future, envisioning how they will spend the coming months and years, sometimes life interjects and makes those plans irrelevant.

Such interjections often include impairments to the musculoskeletal system caused by accidents, sports injuries, or just the rigors of aging. A condition such as a shoulder tear, a herniated disc, or chronic wrist pain often affects people in ways beyond physical discomfort and limited mobility. That’s why many physicians who specialize in orthopedic medicine also strive to help disheartened patients deal with upended hopes for improving their golf or tennis game, enjoying a summer in the sun and surf, or booking the trip of a lifetime. In the hands of a skilled professional, however, a problem that may initially seem like the period at the end of a sentence becomes more like a comma or a semicolon—dreams deferred or disrupted rather than fully dashed.

Advances in surgical technique, preoperative technology, and postsurgical pain management, as well as physical rehabilitation, have greatly improved a person’s chances of experiencing a full recovery. While any kind of surgery possesses its share of risk, many orthopedic procedures can now be performed in outpatient settings—assuming the patient is a good candidate. A patient in need of a knee replacement, for example, can be up and walking with support an hour after their surgery, and back home and on the road to recovery later that same day.

Luckily, the Philadelphia area has an abundance of orthopedic practices and solo practitioners who help patients contend with ailments related to the musculoskeletal system. Suburban Life’s recently published Top Physicians feature includes a number of physicians who specialize in orthopedic surgery, as well as allied specialties such as sports medicine and physical medicine/rehabilitation. These practitioners likely all share the same goal: to help patients heal and return to aspects of their life they may have thought they would need to leave behind.
