Humans are only as good as the strength and durability of their bones, and those bones invariably need some TLC along the way. Breaks, sprains, and other impairments to the musculoskeletal system are common in childhood, but the threats keep coming with time—chronic pain in the back or neck, worn-out knees and shoulders, wrist immobility, etc.—either because of trauma, overuse, or the effects of aging.
Musculoskeletal diseases affect more than one out of every two persons in the United States age 18 and over, and nearly three out of four age 65 and over, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Trauma, back pain, and arthritis account for the three most common musculoskeletal conditions reported, and for which health care visits to physicians’ offices, emergency departments, and hospitals occur each year.
Some patients spend years dealing with physical discomfort that could be addressed by joint replacement or other forms of treatment. Yet orthopedic issues affect a person’s life in ways far beyond pain. Living life in a compromised manner often leaves people feeling broken, disheartened, and alone, unable to pursue hobbies, move naturally, or perform tasks that once came so easily.
In recent years, surgical techniques, perioperative technology, and postsurgical pain management have taken several significant steps forward. In fact, many of the surgical procedures once performed only on an inpatient basis can now be done in outpatient settings, meaning patients can return home to begin the healing process more quickly.
Fortunately, the Philadelphia area abounds with exceptionally skilled practitioners of orthopedic surgery and other subspecialties of orthopedic medicine.
