Healing Journey
With the creation of Care Health Partners in Northeast Philadelphia, Dr. Uzma Kewan fulfills her dream of opening her own practice devoted to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
Uzma Kewan, M.D., views medicine as a journey of sorts, one in which a physician guides a patient from sickness to good health. The word journey applies in equal measure to Dr. Kewan’s globetrotting career in medicine, which began in a remote village in Pakistan, and has culminated in the creation of Care Health Partners, her own medical practice in Northeast Philadelphia.
“It’s exciting to embark on this new journey by delivering compassionate and patient-centered care to people in this community,” she says. “Our patients will be seen, heard, and valued at every visit, and we will be their care partner through every step of the process.”
If Dr. Kewan’s name sounds familiar, it may be from her work as an internist and hospitalist for a private practice in Bucks County, at various hospitals in Bucks County, or from her tenure as the medical director of a locally based provider of hospice care. She is also affiliated with multiple hospitals around the Philadelphia area.
Dr. Kewan’s interest in medicine dates back to her childhood in Pakistan, when she watched her grandfather—also a physician—treat her neighbors, friends, and family in a village not far from the city of Lahore. Seeing her grandfather nurture others, and become such an integral and respected part of the community, inspired her to follow in his footsteps. She then went on to earn her medical degree from Fatima Jinnah Medical University in Lahore, where she chose to focus on internal medicine.
“I have always enjoyed internal medicine because it gives you the opportunity to treat many conditions and treat multiple aspects of the human body,” she says. “An internist treats each patient as a whole person, not just one condition or one system. You also get the chance to form long relationships with patients and their families. Being able to have that kind of lasting impact is why I wanted to become a physician like my grandfather.”
Dr. Kewan eventually moved to the United States with her husband, Raheem, and started a family. Having settled in New Jersey, she continued to amass more knowledge by volunteering, expanding upon her education in medicine, and doing cutting-edge research at the University of Pennsylvania. Later in her career, she would complete her residency training at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Florida, north of Tampa. Within a year of completing the residency, and managing an outpatient physician practice, Dr. Kewan and her family decided to return to the Northeast. The family settled in familiar territory—namely, the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, where her medical career blossomed.
As Dr. Kewan’s knowledge continued to flourish, bits and pieces trickled down to her three children. The exchange of knowledge has since matured into aspirations of pursuing medicine themselves, continuing the legacy carved by their mother. Her eldest and middle children, Ahad and Noor-ul-Ain, latched onto the field of medicine. Fateh, the youngest, recently started high school and aspires to pursue biotechnology.
Dr. Kewan prides herself on her work ethic, compassion, and approachability, as well as her listening skills, all of which are essential when it comes to helping patients resolve issues associated with their health. Licensed to practice medicine in Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, she received board certification through the American Board of Internal Medicine. Working closely with patients day in and day out has presented countless opportunities to further broaden her knowledge base.
While Dr. Kewan has enjoyed working in medicine no matter where she was located and who she was helping, she has long been compelled by a singular desire: to have a practice of her own.
“I’ve always placed an emphasis on patient education in my approach to preventive care and treatment,” she says. “A doctor’s office should be a place of healing, where you will find physical and emotional comfort. That approach will define our practice, and it will affect everything from the design of the facility to the overall tone of our staff.”
Dreams into ideas, ideas into plans, plan into reality. The desire that compelled Dr. Kewan some time ago is now bearing fruit. The roots of her hard work, along with her family’s support, have sunk deep, feeding the name “Care Health Partners” into a practice now taking shape.
When the Care Health Partners office officially opens its doors later this year, Dr. Kewan and her team will provide a wide range of services for adults, including internal medicine for acute and chronic conditions, preventive medicine, and geriatric care. As the practice grows, Dr. Kewan intends to expand available medical services to include specialties such as aesthetic medicine.
“I’m excited to start this journey,” she adds. “I’m here to make a lasting positive impact in my patients’ lives by solving problems and treating complex medical conditions. In addition to treating patients, we’re going to be participating in many public-health initiatives. I want to help my community in every way that I can.”
