Amsterdam Dental Group: A Shore Thing
Renowned for its expertise in dental implants and other areas of specialty, Amsterdam Dental Group brings its brand of advanced dentistry to the Jersey Shore with an expansion to Margate.
In the Philadelphia area, the name Amsterdam Dental Group has been synonymous with excellence in dental care for more than seven decades. Now, with the establishment of a new office in Margate, New Jersey, the practice also delivers the apex of dental care to anyone who lives along the Jersey Shore, from Cape May to Toms River.
“We have been a household name in the Philadelphia area for 70 years, so we’re now treating our fourth or fifth generation of families,” says Howard P. Fraiman, D.M.D., managing partner of Amsterdam Dental Group, which also has offices on the Main Line and in Philadelphia. “We merged our practice with a longstanding, trusted practice in Margate that had been serving Shore residents for 50 years. It was a natural fit for us.”
Dr. Fraiman describes the Margate location as “a first-class office in the Parkway area, the most beautiful section of Margate.” The office had previously been operated and lovingly tended by Alan and Joel Frankel, D.M.D., whom Dr. Fraiman and his colleagues had known for many years; Drs. Frankel had close ties to the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where all of Amsterdam Dental Group’s clinicians received their training.
Founded in 1948 by the legendary dental educator and clinician Morton Amsterdam, D.D.S., Amsterdam Dental Group comprises a team of seven highly skilled clinicians: Dr. Fraiman; Jeffrey Ingber, D.M.D.; Brian Kasten, D.M.D.; Caleb Cross, D.M.D.; Thomas H. Yoo, D.M.D.; Michelle Ordway, D.D.S.; and Briar E. Voy, D.D.S. Each of the clinicians has either dual training in prosthodontics and periodontics or specialized training in prosthodontics. Harold Baumgarten, D.M.D., who began his career in 1977, retired from the practice in April.
Amsterdam Dental Group utilizes advanced technology to achieve optimal outcomes for patients. Examples include 3D imaging and digital smile design, in which photography and digital scans combine to help each patient visualize, discuss, and agree upon a treatment plan prior to any work being done. Such technology is essential in the planning, execution, and final restoration of All-on-4®, a treatment concept from Nobel Biocare in which clinicians use four dental implants to provide patients with a fixed full-arch prosthesis on the day of surgery. Dr. Fraiman says All-on-4®, as well as All-on-X, in which the prosthesis is anchored with six implants, is ideal for patients who have lost all or most of their teeth and have few options other than dentures.
“The level of training we offer differentiates us from the average dental office,” Dr. Fraiman adds. “We’re all specialists in implant and prosthetic dentistry, and most of us integrate more than one specialty. Whether someone needs a routine cleaning or a simple filling or the most advanced dentistry possible, we’re a patient-centered practice that delivers the same quality care to everyone.”
A Solution for Every Need
Patients who come to the Margate office are likely to be treated by either Dr. Yoo or Dr. Voy. Dr. Yoo, who splits his time between Amsterdam Dental Group’s Margate and Philadelphia offices, appreciates being part of a small, relaxed community where everyone seems to know everyone else. He also enjoys the diversity of the patient population surrounding Margate.

Dr. Yoo, who splits his time between Amsterdam Dental Group’s Margate and Philadelphia offices, appreciates being part of a small, relaxed community where everyone seems to know everyone else. He also enjoys the diversity of the patient population surrounding Margate.
“It’s like a family in Margate, both in the office and in the community,” says Dr. Yoo, who joined the practice in 2022. “I also like the Margate location because I enjoy the surgical and restorative aspects of what I do, especially when it comes to emergency patients. A broken front tooth is everyone’s worst nightmare. Given my skill set and the recent advances in dentistry, I can give [a patient] a temporary tooth in a day. It’s gratifying to help someone solve a serious problem and get them on their way.”
Dr. Voy, a classically trained prosthodontist, joined Amsterdam Dental Group in 2024. With her expertise in both fixed and removable prostheses, she brings a unique skill set to the practice. For example, she has expertise in icon resin infiltration to solve white-spot lesions on teeth, as well as fibular flap reconstruction, in which she can rebuild the bone in the jaw using a piece of bone taken from the lower leg.
“No matter what they need, I want all my patients to leave my care better off than when they came to me,” she says. “I’m here to advance the field of dentistry, to use minimally invasive dentistry whenever possible, and to prioritize my patients’ overall dental health. My goal each day is to make sure they have a good dental experience, especially if they have a phobia or trauma.”
One of the things Dr. Voy likes most about being part of the practice is the opportunity to collaborate with her fellow clinicians, all of whom have unique areas of specialty.
“Collaboration is a big part of what we do,” adds Dr. Kasten. “Whenever we do more complicated cases, we usually pair up. With All-on-X cases, where we’re placing four to six implants and immediately loading [the prosthesis], pairing off helps us be as efficient as possible.”
Dr. Kasten also collaborates with Penn Medicine’s oral and maxillofacial surgeons and ENT doctors to treat cancer patients with complex dental issues. In addition, he is on staff at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and often works with members of CHOP’s craniofacial team to treat patients with congenital issues such as ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lift and palate, or otherwise in need of advanced dental care.
“That part of my practice is by far the most rewarding and interesting,” says Dr. Kasten, who works primarily out of Amsterdam Dental Group’s offices in Paoli and Philadelphia. “After these patients have been through extensive treatment such as jaw surgery, bone grafting, and orthodontics, I get to give them teeth and a smile, often for the first time in their life.”
No matter the need or the patient, Amsterdam Dental Group aspires to be a valuable part of each community it serves.
“With the Margate office, we provide access to our care to the Shore community and also to people who previously had a residence in Philly but now primarily live here or somewhere else in the off-season,” Dr. Fraiman adds. “Whether someone lives in Philadelphia, the suburbs, or down the Shore, we make a very high level of care accessible to everyone.”
Teaching the Next Generation
Education is foundational to Amsterdam Dental Group. The practice’s founder, Dr. Morton Amsterdam, served as chairman of the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry within the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine from 1963 to 1967. He also served director of Penn Dental Medicine’s Graduate Periodontics and Periodontal Prosthesis from 1969 through 1973.

He also served director of Penn Dental Medicine’s Graduate Periodontics and Periodontal Prosthesis from 1969 through 1973.
Likewise, all of the practice’s current clinicians have played a part in educating the next generation of dental specialists in academic settings. Dr. Howard Fraiman, for example, is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Periodontics and Prosthodontics at Penn Dental Medicine, and served as director of the Postdoctoral Periodontal Prosthesis Program for the past six years.
Dr. Thomas Yoo is a clinical assistant professor at Penn Dental Medicine, where he received his D.M.D. and his undergraduate degree, though he also teaches at Metropolitan Hospital in New York. He sees teaching as an opportunity to not only give back, but also to collaborate with other medical specialties on complex cases.
Dr. Briar Voy, who earned a Certificate in Advanced Prosthodontics from Penn Dental Medicine, now enjoys mentoring residents in Penn’s prosthodontics program. She is also actively involved in the dental community, specifically with the Pennsylvania American College of Prosthodontics and the Academy of Osseointegration, which she serves as a member of the annual meeting committee. She also co-hosts the academy’s “AO Hotseat” podcast, where world-renowned clinical and scientific experts discuss developments in the world of implant dentistry.
