At Neurologic Health Associates PC, Dr. Donald McCarren specializes in helping patients in need of treatment for various types of neurological concerns and cognitive maladies, from multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease to chronic pain and sleep disorders.

Dr. McCarren received his medical degree at The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1989 and completed his medical training at Thomas Jefferson University, where in his last year he served as chief neurology resident. He also trained with the esteemed Dr. Robert Schwartzman, a renowned neurologist and chairman of the department of neurology at Drexel University. These experiences helped him greatly when he decided to go into practice for himself in 1997.

“I emphasize patient care and attentiveness in my practice,” says Dr. McCarren, who holds a “superb” 9.5 Avvo rating as a top neurology physician. “I love medicine and I love neurology. My grandmother had Alzheimer’s disease, and that experience had an effect on me when I was studying at medical school.”

In fact, Dr. McCarren has had a lifelong passion for medicine, though he has developed a particularly keen interest in various neurological disorders and conditions. In addition to managing his thriving Collegeville-based practice, he also holds a teaching position at Drexel University.

“Education is very important to me, both in my office and outside of it,” he says. “I’m still involved in teaching and lectures, and I’m now teaching other physicians how to treat patients with chronic migraines. … I also regularly attend American Academy of Neurology meetings, because I still want to be learning as much as possible.”

Dr. McCarren, a golfer and fantasy-sports devotee when he’s not treating patients, is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He was awarded fellowship status by the American Academy of Neurology and American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and also maintains memberships in the American Academy of Neurology, the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association and the Pennsylvania Medical Society, among others.

In addition, Dr. McCarren has received several prestigious awards throughout his career, including a Pew Charitable Trust grant for a computer-assisted instruction on dementia and an award from the Alumni International Fellowship Committee. Awards and honors aside, the best part of his practice is the opportunity to form long-term bonds with patients and provide treatment that can have positive, life-changing outcomes.

“I’m lucky in that I really do enjoy what I do,” says Dr. McCarren. “Patients should come to me because I care, I’m interested and I always do my best to treat them.”
