When it comes to home entertainment, the staff at Royal Billiard & Recreation is not playing around.
Serving Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties for nearly three decades, the family run business has been bringing other families back to the table, so to speak, through its unparalleled expertise and devotion to customer service.
The business is owned by Frank and Connie Gorup and their daughter, Audra DelConte, and operated with the help of longtime sales manager Jon Zellers. Born in 1982, the business has become a haven for all things entertainment.
Originally from Kansas, Connie said the idea for the company came after visiting a similar store there. “We really liked that business and thought something like it could work here,” Connie says.
“We like fun projects and really, what we sell is basically like furniture for fun.”
But since bringing the concept to the area, Royal Billiard has become more than a pool player’s best friend, it also has branched out to offer customers complete game room packages that can transform a room into a space everyone can enjoy without having to leave home. Also offering a wide selection of bars, bar stools, spas and even theater seating, one trip to the fun, 7,000 square-foot showroom located at 2622 Bethlehem Pike in Hatfield and it doesn’t take long to see that Royal Billiard is long on every gaming option.
“Our goal has always been to offer the best in service, quality and price but also to offer an enjoyable shopping experience,” Connie says. “Our customers are mainly families looking for something to make their home someplace they and their children will enjoy with their friends. A pool table is a great way to make sure you see your teenager’s friends.”
Other options
While keeping in mind some people don’t see pool tables and bars as attractive additions to their homes, Connie says the staff is capable of making either a pool table, bar or spa into a beautiful and functional piece of furniture by providing a host of styles and finishes.
“Bars have become very popular items as more consumers learn that they are very affordable when premade, or even custom made by a large manufacturer,” Connie adds. “We usually have at least 10 bars on our showroom floor in styles suitable for your game room or your living room.”
Also dealing in dart boards, poker tables, shuffleboards, foosball and air hockey tables—even artistic bar signs and sports memorabilia to accent any game room—it’s the 20 pool tables on display that has helped Royal Billiard carve out its niche.
Top of the line tables
The store specializes in American-made tables by Olhausen and Vitalie. These lines offer a variety of finishes and felts that can match virtually any home decor. “The options are really limitless; whatever you want, we can get it,” Zellers says of the billiard tables that come in lengths from 7 to twelve feet. But it isn’t just the options that have made Olhausen tables Royal Billiard’s bestseller, it is the quality. Utilizing what are called “Accu-Fast” cushions that bond completely with the wood on the table, they not only provide better play, they are nearly indestructible.
“They are actually the only American-made billiard cushion,” Zellers says, adding foreign-made tables are more difficult to maintain and find parts for. “With other tables, the cushions can get dry rot. What’s particularly good about these is that even though they are guaranteed, I have never had to replace one of these cushions.”
Zellers, who has been with the company for 15 years, will not only help recommend a bone maple finish or special sight for your dream table, he and the staff will come to your home, measure your space and even sketch out a plan for your purchase so you never find yourself behind the 8-ball.
“All of the tables we sell can be broken down,” Connie explains. “Even if someone was to move later, we can help them with that.”
George and Tracy Reinhart of Souderton are proof the experience doesn't end in the store. George says Royal Billiard’s products and staff helped him transform his basement into his dream game room. “I have a pretty large basement and wanted to keep the entertainment at home instead of going out,” he says. “I heard about Royal Billiard through my dental practice and have been going to them for about five years.”
And the staff has been coming back to him.
George says after purchasing a pool table, shuffle board, dart board, and most recently a hot tub from Royal Billiard, the staff not only delivered everything, they have returned for follow- ups.
“They really have the best prices, better than what I could find online, and they even came back a year later to make sure everything is level and running right. That really impressed me.”
